Essay on Yoga for Students and Children

Yoga is a philosophy which first developed in India, in which physical exercise and meditation are performed to achieve relaxation of body and mind. The knowledge of yoga is believed to have emerged when Lord Shiva (the first Yogi) bestowed his knowledge upon the ‘Saptarishis’ or ‘seven sages’. These sages traveled throughout the world to spread the knowledge of yoga. Though yoga existed since pre-medic times, it was Maharishi Patanjali who codified and systemized the knowledge of yoga in his book ‘Yogasutra’.

However, it was only recently that yoga gained international recognition. The credit goes to our Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had made a historic speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) highlighting the importance and benefits of yoga in September 2014, announced June 21 as ‘International Yoga Day’. The 4th ‘International Yoga Day’ was held on 21st June 2018 with the theme ‘Yoga for Peace’.

The modern sedentary lifestyle coupled with increasing intake of high calorie-containing foods and stress of a fast-paced life has paved the way for many diseases. Hence, the world needs yoga today more than it ever did. Various scientific studies have proved that the various postures of Yoga help relieve stress, increase metabolism and prevent cardiac diseases.

Investing 20 minutes daily in yoga can prove to be a game changer in one’s life. It is high time that land where yoga originated also starts practicing yoga every day. The world has accepted it, so should we. One day is not enough, every day should be a ‘Yoga Day’.
