Art has been a part of human life since the dawn of civilization. It creates beauty and happiness in the minds of people. Hence, there is the belief that artistic works should be financially supported by the government, and the government should oversee how the money is being spent.
This is quite obvious that no structure except government knows nations cultural needs best. It can evaluate which sphere of cultural life needs development. Then, the government can undertake such projects which will help revive that particular art form. Also, the government should control the budget by ensuring that the money is well-spent.
However, funding can have an adverse impact on art too. To illustrate, when there is a selective government funding, artists will hesitate to perform such art which is unlikely to s get governmental assistance. That means artists will face a lack of freedom in expressing themselves. This can be compared to total censorship, as an art will be totally under governmental control.
As an alternative to letting a government to control art, it is possible to set up a quasi-government agency to manage the affairs of art. It should consist of proven and experienced cultural activists and artists. Firstly, this will ensure proper financial support for art, and secondly, it will ensure freedom of expression for art.
