Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Essay 400 Words

Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Cleanliness plays an important role in improving the quality of Life (QOL) of an individual as well as of the community. WHO estimates that cleanliness drive will save over 3 Lacs lives and result in a fall in diarrhea cases by over 30%. Even Mahatma Gandhi had urged his fellow countrymen to consider sanitation as important as Independence.

In befitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, the campaign was launched on 2nd October 2014. It is a nationwide campaign for the period 2014 to 2019. The main aim of the campaign is to create Sanitation facilities for all. Every rural family is to be provided a toilet by 2019 in order to discourage defecation in the open. The campaign aims to clean up streets, roads & infrastructure of cities, smaller towns & of course, rural areas. Waste management is also an integral part of the program.

To encourage greater public participation, Prime Minister Modi, recently re-launched the campaign with the title ‘ Swachhata Hi Seva ’ movement. This exercise itself is a testimony to the fact that the campaign has been only partially successful. There are still some parts of the country that are not free from defecation in the open. Building toilets are not enough. Sewer systems are not just expensive to build but also require massive amounts of water and constant and costly maintenance. The biggest loophole is that people take this campaign seriously only on certain occasions and days but not on a routine or regular basis.

Although partially successful in achieving its objectives, Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan (SBA) is indeed a noble initiative and deserves credit. The biggest plus point of the program has been that it is combining toilet construction and waste treatment technologies with community mobilization. Eminent personalities from various fields are regularly nominated to give a boost to the cleanliness drive. The efforts to take the awareness program to people from all walks of life as well as to every nook and corner of the country is praiseworthy. The data from various surveys prove that the Indians are responding. Gradually that campaign is picking up as a people’s movement. Indeed, it is the biggest Behavioral change program undertaken in recent times.

Let’s hope Bapu’s dream of a ‘ CLEAN INDIA’, comes TRUE.
