Finally, Mahindra has launched the biggest SUV in its line up. Mahindra Alturas G4 is here to take on the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. Mahindra Alturas G4 translates to heights and Mahindra clearly wants to scale new heights in the market with its flagship SUV. The Alturas G4 is Mahindra’s version of fourth generation Ssangyong Rexton. but where the last generation Rexton was marketed as Ssangyong the new model will get Mahindra badging off-course. It will come with new styling 2D grille which is a bit different from the global SUV. The Alturas G4 matches its rivals on size so this is big SUV and it has that butch look buyer in the segment. The Design is brawny yet sophisticated. No styling lines so that everyone can like this car.
Mahindra Alturas G4 Design
The LED-DRLs have neatly detailed the large wheel arches add loads of visual mass to the SUV and it’s neatly style at the rear too. This is a well turned out SUV. Some might find the 18” alloy wheel to look a size too small. Also while the chunky D pillar adds solidity to the reign the window for the third-row passengers are really small. It is built on the body on the frame which makes Alturas sits high up and the absence of footboard means you’ll need a big step into the cabin.
Mahindra Alturas G4 Interiors
When you do open the door you will find driver seat automatically slide back to aid ingress and it is a cool welcome gesture. Mahindra has filled up but best in class goodies for the interior. When you will sit in Mahindra Alturas G4 you’ll actually find the view both outside and inside is rather good. On the inside everything is very laid out, it feels like a premium SUV.

The real difference in this SUV is the difference in the level of quality. There are few hard plastics but largely everything is soft to the touch feels premium. The seats look rich they’re really comfortable and it will get the quilted leather effect on the dashboard which looks stunning.
The middle row of Mahindra Alturas G4 has lots of space and the seats can be recline as well. There is a hump in the roof to accommodate the sunroof mechanism that might eat up into headroom for taller occupants. Sitting in the third row is not the best but is reasonable by class standards. Boot space is fair, the part tailgate opens to reveal some usable room with all seats up, fold the last row down and you’ll free up serious room for luggage.

Note – Mahindra Alturas G4 gets a five-star rating in the Korean endcap is also very reassuring.
First, in the segment, it full gets 360-degree surround view camera that is a big help when parking the Mahindra Alturas G4. Magindra Alturas G4 is the first SUV in the segment to get ventilated seats as well. Another addition is the 8-way power adjustable driver seats with memory, electric parking brake, dual zone climate control and ambient lighting. The 8-inch touchscreen works fine but with a bit of a lag. It features android auto and Apple CarPlay.
There is a 7-inch screen in the instrument cluster which gives a whole lot of info including tire air pressures and also has the option of changing the theme of the display.
Mahindra Alturas G4 Engine
Now we are going to talk what’s under the hood of Mahindra Alturas G4. The Alturas engine comes powered by a Ssangyong four-cylinder 2.2-litre diesel engine. The single variable geometry turbo in current Bs4 avatar makes 180 HP at 4000@rpm and 420nm of torque between 1600 to 2600rpm. The Mahindra Alturas G4 engine is mated to a Mercedes source 7-speed automatic unit. Mahindra will not offer a manual.

Mahindra Alturas G4 Review
The first thing you will notice when you’ll get behind the wheel is the Mahindra Alturas G4 level of refinement. The engine is quiet and doesn’t really make much of a fuss off the power and performance. Road noise is also well contained as is wind noise so it’s a fairly nice and refined experience. The Mahindra Alturas G4 engine does make a reasonable amount of power but it did not get a spike in power delivery that we’ve just come to expect from large turbo diesel engines. The power delivery and buildup of power is quite linear. It not so exciting but it gets the job done.
The Mahindra Alturas G4 7 speed gearbox plays its role well but there are no paddle shifters. Manual shifts are only via small buttons on the gear lever. The big SUV is built on a new body on frame and the body uses a generous dose of rigid and relatively high strength steel. Still, the four-wheel drive Mahindra Alturas G4 dips the scale at 2150 kgs and you can feel the bulk in the corners. It is a big SUV and you’re driving in tight confines or when you have to pull off a u-turn even when you’re driving on a winding road you feel that you are behind the wheel of something really big.
The steering is light it’s not got that real good sense of connection. So, on the whole, this is not really an SUV that you want to hustle around the bends. The ride quality is good but still, it is a bit rigid when we ride the ladder frame chassis. The Mahindra Alturas G4 will be available in a lower trim two-wheel drive version but the fuel spec mode will have quite a few off-road goodies.
