Question – Based upon what you heard, which of the following is a correct statement:

1. People think they eat less sugar than they actually do
2. There is a huge amount of research showing sugar is just as bad as alcohol
3. Coca cola has the highest amount of sugar among common food products
4. Sugar costs companies much lesser compared to other food ingredients
5. It can be safely said that we are consuming more sugar than we actually need

TRANSCRIPT (Only for reference, it will not be given in PTE Academic Test)

There is a huge amount of research showing you know that we are eating very large amounts of sugar. It is underestimated. Because when you ask people how much they eat when they know it is bad for them they tell you much less just like with alcohol. So the actual estimates of sugar are much lower than they should be but we are all eating far too much sugar. We don’t need sugar. It is stuffed into products like sweetened soft drinks. One bottle of Coca Cola has got 10 teaspoons of sugar in it and then biscuits and all the confectionery, cakes and everywhere you move its sugar and it is incredibly cheap for the industry to put in. It is one of the cheapest ingredients you can put into food.

2. PTE Listening Multiple Choice Choose Multiple AnswersListen to the audio and answer the following question.

Question – Why is it difficult to guess which products have sugar or not?

1. Manufacturers use vinegar to hide the taste of sugar
2. Ingredient labels sometimes list sugar by other names
3. Its taste is sometimes balanced by other ingredients
4. When eating something like a curry paste it is not possible to detect sugar
5. Glucose is used to prevent sugar from being detected

TRANSCRIPT (Only for reference, it will not be given in PTE Academic Test)

Surprised when I read labels what sugar is in. I find it is quite high up ingredients and there is also some other form of sugar in the ingredients like glucose. Also it seems to be sometimes balanced with vinegar so you can’t actually tell it is in there so much. For example, you might have paste or flavour things, curry paste, pesto, fish cakes, its seems crazy to me that you seem to find sugar in all these food stuffs. If you were preparing the food you wouldn’t actually include any sugar yourself.

5. The author misses hearing the national anthem compared to his childhood

TRANSCRIPT (Only for reference, it will not be given in PTE Academic Test)

Just about old enough to remember when God Save the Queen was played at the end of films in the cinema. Such moments you were expected to stand to attention before filing out of the auditorium and on to the street. Mercifully, this practice became obsolete before I was out of short trousers. In recent years I have seldom had to endure the drone of the national anthem. As a nation we hear it because the kick off England football matches. We also hear it on the rare occasions at least prior to 2012 that a British athlete one a gold medal at an athletic championships or Olympics. We might hear a snatch of it on the news whenever a monarch turns up on an official visit. But the fact is the God Save the Queen probably reached the height of its popularity during the heyday of the British Empire when nearly all the colonial territories utilized it as their national theme tune. However, with the onset of 20th century decolonization, God Save the Queen was quickly replaced by new national anthems in Africa, in Asia, in the Caribbean, in Australia, Canada. These days its ponderous beats are no longer globally ubiquitous.

1. People these days are too busy trying to excel at work that they don’t have time for other things
2. People do not prefer to spend too much time on anything pleasurable or purposeful
3. People don’t pay enough attention to those things to realise the benefits
4. People would rather spend time with family than doing things for themselves
5. People do not truly understand what will make them happy misguided by what they hear from others

TRANSCRIPT (Only for reference, it will not be given in PTE Academic Test)

l spend a bit more time you know with things that we find pleasurable and purposeful which would include spending more time with people that we like being with, would include spending a bit more time outdoors, maybe listening to music. All of these things I think most of us know if we stop and think for a moment would make us feel happier. The interesting question is why we don’t do more of it and helping others too. All these things that we would get good feedback for if we paid attention to those experiences. But one of the reasons why we don’t do those things more is we don’t pay attention to those experiences as much as we might. We tell ourselves big stories about the things that should make us happy. Buying more stuff, earning more money, the kind of narratives and stories that we tell ourselves or are told by other people that sometimes deviate us from the path of using our time in those ways that make us happier.
