Formal written examination is an effective way to assess students
Formal written examination could be one of the ways to assess students. But I doubt that it is an effective way to analyze student’s capabilities and learning. The written examination is conducted to check whether a student has learned what he was taught or not. To some extent, it is fine. It is utmost important to keep a track if students are getting any knowledge or not. However, it does not wholly evaluate student’s skills.
Written examination is helpful to know if there is any loophole in pedagogical methods and where is the scope for improvement? Also, educators or examiners get an idea from student’s written papers if they need knowledgeable assistance. So yes, written examination is a must. But to be fully dependent on these exams to evaluate their level of knowledge would not be fair.
These exams can merely be cleared by cramming. It makes unfair to other students who might not be good at their studies but their intellectual level, skills, confidence, general knowledge are enough to take them to the heights. We should not restrict ourselves just to the written exams to assess students.
Group discussions, presentations, practical exams, group activities need to be conducted to analyze the overall growth of the student. We can judge any student on the basis of what he or she is taught in a particular class. So for me, practical exams and group activities should be conducted to enhance their knowledge. One’s career should be not judged on the basis of formal written paper. We should escalate practical studies along with written exams. It improves learning ability and enhances the learning process. A student should be assessed on the basis of just grades.
