In recent years we have seen a rise in the number of overweight children. This is clearly visible in city areas. Putting on weight at an early age will invite a large number of problem in their personal life and also on the community they live in. There are a large number of reasons behind this increase.
The most important reason for this change is the lack of physical exercises. Due to urbanization, playgrounds and open spaces vanished. As a result, young ones are left with no opportunity to play outdoors. As a consequence, they remain indoors playing computer games watching television which in turn leads to severe problems like obesity and diabetics. Yet another factor leading to this shortage of outdoor activities is prolonged working and studying hours. Because of the burden of their heavy curriculum, kids find it difficult to save time for games or sports which intensifies the problem.
Moreover, changing food habits also play a role in making children obese. For example these days, children prefer fast food items to homemade food. There is an alarming increase in the consumption of food items like hamburger, pizza, and beverages like coca cola and Pepsi. It has been proved time and again that many of these items contain artificial ingredients that can lead to obesity. A key reason for this increase in consumption is the ever larger number of fast food restaurants. To worsen the situation, these days parents are giving too much freedom and money to children what they spend recklessly on different food items.
However, it is possible to control the menace with a little effort from the part of parents and government. First of all, parents should see that their children are getting enough time and opportunities to go outdoors and play games. Furthermore, they should keep the food their children take in check and should always discourage unhealthy eating habits. In addition, it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that each city is provided with adequate facilities for physical fitness. Enough room should be left for parks and playgrounds.
Overall, it is seen that the reasons for obesity lie in the lifestyle of people. It is possible to control this epidemic effectively with combined efforts.
