Reforms in Education System in India 300 Words

Persistent questioning and healthy inquisitiveness are the first requisite for acquiring learning of any kind. MK Gandhi

The history of Indian education has its roots in ‘Gurukul System’ where subjects varied from Sanskrit, scriptures, mathematics, and metaphysics. However, this system changes during the colonial era with the British setting up schools that followed a curriculum, confined to Mathematics and science, hence following a more classroom oriented approach.

The main aim of education is to impart knowledge of our rich heritage, architecture, art, dance, literature, medicine, science, spiritualism, trade, commence etc., but it has been limited to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects. Even the language along with other subjects are a priority to students only if they are scoring in nature. Population rise has worsened the scenario by increasing the competition of scoring as many marks as possible at all costs. The focus has shifted from learning, skill development and improvements to memory testing.

The business side has not left this section unaffected. With costly fee structure, schools force their own set of books which are very expensive and extensive. This adds to the weight of school bags and mental health. Right from beginning students are taught to follow textbooks only and in between the role of the library has diminished. Imagination and knowledge are restricted to the throwing of phrases like ‘out of syllabus’, ‘will come next year’ etc. Today for a student choosing a career is dictated by his previous performance in exams. Our grading system in exams is more theoretical and less practical, hence of little use in future.

Hence there is a need to foster curiosity and creativity, not competition. Teachers need to give more attention and books reading should be encouraged. We need to shift our focus individual and social growth which has been the main goal all along.
