Commonwealth Games are an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth nations. India competed at 21st commonwealth games organised in Gold Coast, Australia and finished 3rd in the medal tally begging 66 medals with 26 Gold. India’s combined 66 medals are its third-best showing in the history of the games. Its best remains, 101 in New Delhi (2010) and 69 in Manchester (2002). However, India bettered its performance compared to 2014 games where it claimed 64 medals and finished 5th overall.
In 2018 games India’s maximum medals came from shooting (16), followed wrestling (12) and weightlifting (9). In table tennis it was a memorable game for Manika Batra as she picked up medals in all the games she competed in. Teenager Deepak Lather becomes the youngest Indian weightlifter to claim a commonwealth games model also Neeraj Chopra becomes the first Indian Javelin thrower to claim a Gold medal. Apart from these outstanding performances, Saina Nehwal, Vikash Krishan, Vinesh Phogat, Gaurav Solanki etc also won gold medals in their respective sports. Indeed, it was a grand success for India and its athletes in CWG 2018.
However, when we compared to the performances of the top two countries which are way ahead in the medal tally. It depicts that India needs to improve in the areas of sports. With the Initiatives like “Khalo India”, India is trying to establish itself as a sporting nation. Focus on proper development of sports infrastructure in the remotest area, training, and regular sports event are required. India will defiantly establish itself as a sporting nation if the spirit of sporting culture is instilled in its people.

India has performed very well this year. It was India’s 18th appearance at the Commonwealth Games. With 26 Gold medals and a total of 66 medals, India finished 3rd for the tournament behind Australia and England. It was India’s best position since the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Some athletes who won gold medals are Saina Nehwal, Manika Batra, Vinesh Phogat, Mirabai Chanu etc.
Although India has won 66 medals including 26 gold medals, India can improve these numbers further. Indians have much more potential. There are many challenges in improving the number of medals and these challenges come from within the society. Our parents prefer their children career as a doctor or engineer over athletes.
There are many steps which need to be taken to improve the culture of sports in India. Make sports education compulsory till class 10th. Also, we need to focus on rural and semi-urban India in order to improve our standards in sports because a large number of athletes come from these areas. The government needs to open up at least one large-scale sports complex per district.
India is improving day by day but much more needs to be done so that we can do better in Tokyo Olympics which will be held in 2020.

Commonwealth Games are an international multi sport event. Athletes from the Commonwealth Nations come to play various kinds of sports. The event was first held in 1930. Recently, 2018 Commonwealth Games was held at Gold Coast, Australia from 4th of April to 15th April.
India participated this tournament with a strong team of 221 athletes. Out of them, they won 26 Gold medals and a total of 66 medals(64 in 2014). India finished
3rd for the tournament and it was India’s best position since 2010 Commonwealth
Games. India was the best nation in games like disciplines, weightlifting, shooting, wrestling, badminton and table tennis and it was the second best nation in boxing. Players like Saina Nehwal and Manika Batra performed better than expected. Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian javelin thrower to claim a gold medal.
Our national hockey players disappoint everyone once again. SAI is pumping in more money into various sports which are planned and administrated very well. Strategic planning and team bonding have improved the performance drastically as compared to previous years performance. Government incentive like “Khelo India Programme” has increased the budget for sports. Now a total of Rs 2196
crore was spent, compared to Rs 1943 crore earmarked last year.
The high end international performance will increase if the government regularly spend on infrastructure, better diet and fitness. As compared to other nations Indian players should get world class training and support from society. Centre and State should promote private funding in sports which will reduce corruption and nepotism.
Medal victories at CWG revel that Indian players are consistently enhancing their performance. The emergence of few star female players in the last few years has signalled a major shift in the Indian sports sphere. Our performance in CWG games showed the clear potential of our youngsters. With proper training, better execution and robust sports infrastructure our talented sportspersons will surely bring more medals for our country.
