Cyber Security means protecting data, networks, programs and other information from unauthorized or unintended access, destruction or change. The rapid development of technology and the availability of the internet to most of the public broadens the pathway of cyber-crime. In this age where the use of computers has become commonplace, cybersecurity is a major concern. With growing internet penetration, cybersecurity is of paramount importance for India’s growth. The threat from people with malicious intent can be caused due to negligence and vulnerabilities.
Different forms of attacks like viruses, malware, spyware, phishing, ransomware, fraud etc. Infected Web Pages and malicious websites allow hackers to gain illegal access to other computer systems. Opening email attachments that carry the virus, clicking malicious links or websites or unintentionally downloading a dangerous program or installing infected Apps in mobile. Attackers can be terrorists, crackers or recreational hackers.
There is a huge risk to an individual’s personal information and financial transactions. This can be used for personal gains like blackmailing and fraud transactions. It is important for individuals, organizations and countries as well. India still ranks higher than global peers when it comes to instances of malware and ransomware attacks at 54% as compared to 47% globally. Cyber security is concerned with making cyberspace safe and preventing any form of unauthorized and mala-fide access to a personal computer, a laptop, a smart phone or a major network like the national banking system or the railway network. It assumes significance in the light of Digital India Mission, push for Cashless Economy, 4G Revolution and tremendous rise in the number of smart phones in India. Whether it is for the email, WhatsApp, net banking or Paytm, almost everyone is dependent on the internet and hence potentially vulnerable.
It is just 21 years that public internet has come to India and right now India has a large number of subscribers for internet usage. The pace of growth and the pace at which usage is increasing is pushing us towards a digital society. When all this growth is happening, there are many issues that come up like cyber crimes, Threats like Phishing, Denial of cards, Credit card Frauds causes thousands and lakhs of money every day which causes huge financial risks and effects Indian economy. RBI aim of cashless transactions will be delayed and this goal can’t be reached if such attacks keep repeating.
In the case of internet security, attribution is very difficult. Traditional security concepts like deterrence and retaliation are difficult to apply. Most importantly, the absence of any geographical barriers makes it a reason for concern. This is an inherently transnational thing. There are severe limits to what one country can do in order to manage the internet. The Internet needs global governance and how efficient it is determined security.
After land, sea, air and space, cyberspace has been officially declared as the 5th dimension of warfare. Land, sea and air are well defined physical spaces to be defended, unlike cyberspace.
