Essay on Navratri Festival

Navratri festival is a very important Hindu festival and celebrated all over the country. Navratri festival is celebrated to worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga. These are 9 names of Goddess Durga: Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Mahagauri, Siddhidatri. These forms are also called Navdurga. This festival is celebrated for 9 nights and 10 days. Navratri is a Sanskrit word in which ‘Nav’ means nine days and ‘Ratri’ means night. The last day of this festival is celebrated as ‘Vijayadashmi’ or ‘Dussehra’.

There are two stories behind the Navratri festival. The first story is that during the time of Navratri, Goddess Durga had conquered Mahishasur and the second story is that all the Vanar Sena (Monkeys), including Ram, Lakshaman, Hanuman, worshiped Goddess Durga from Ashvin Shukla Pratipada till 9th (Navmi) and after that Lord Rama slaughtered Ravana on the tenth day. Therefore, the festival of Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day.

Navaratri festivals are celebrated twice in our country. The first festival of Navaratri is celebrated in Chaitra month and the second festival of Navaratri is celebrated in Ashwin month.

During Navratri festival, devotees keep fasting by drinking fruit or water. In many places in India, on the ninth day of Navaratri also do ‘Kanya Poojan’. In this worship, nine little girls are worshiped as goddess Durga. In many states of India, the pandals of Durga May are made. People go there and worship Goddess Durga. People all around the world come to attend Navratri in India. On the tenth day, Devotee immerses idols of Durga in water.
