The nature of the average holiday is changing essay

Holidays are important because they provide a break from our normal daily routine and from the world of work. Traditionally, holidays have been seen as a time for relaxation and as an opportunity to visit another country in order to explore its geography and customs. Nowadays, however, it seems that the nature of holiday making has changed.

The reason for this change may be the changing nature of work. While work in the past involved a lot of physical exertion, today the works are sedentary in nature. So, it is natural that people look for some action in their holidays.

These days, some people want their holiday to be a kind of adventure and find this more exciting than going to the beach or visiting museums. On an adventure holiday, one may prefer quite basic accommodation to a luxurious hotel. Activities may involve things such as bushwalking or cycling. Some other popular adventure activities are water sports, mountain climbing and paragliding. Holidays like these are popular with people of all ages and can often help promote tourism in rural environments.

It is clearly visible that most of these activities enable people to come closer to nature. It is not irrational to think that the modern concrete jungles are less interesting as compared to nature. To be precise, being an animal, there lies a basic instinct in human to be with nature.

To conclude, there is now greater awareness of the damaging effects of mass tourism and this may be one reason for the changing nature of holidays. This can only be a good thing. Perhaps people are also discovering that it is more refreshing to take an active holiday than to lie on a beach, though that is still a question of personal preference.
